If you see the FSC® label (FSC®-C126290) on the paper bag you just bought from us, you can be certain that the wood used in its production comes from forests managed in accordance with FSC standards. Among other things, this helps protect wildlife habitats, maintain biodiversity, preserve old-growth trees, ensure zero deforestation, protect the rights of indigenous peoples, and guarantee fair wages and a safe working environment.
You may have noticed that the text beneath the FSC® logo varies depending on whether you are holding a paper bag, a gift box, or a paper cup? This is because there are several different FSC® labels, each ensuring that we protect forests and the environment as best possible.
FSC® Recycled
FSC® Recycled
A product bearing the FSC® Recycled label is made from recycled materials.
FSC® distinguishes between two types of recycled materials: post-consumer and pre-consumer.
Post-consumer recycled materials are materials derived from products that have already been used by consumers or businesses and subsequently collected for recycling.
Pre-consumer materials are production residues that are collected and recycled; examples include sawdust or wood offcuts left over from the manufacturing process.
The FSC® scheme requires documentation and verification of the recycled materials used through the FSC certification system; for paper products bearing the FSC® Recycled label, this means that all paper-based components included in the FSC Recycled claim must be verifiable as recycled materials.
Recycling paper extends the lifecycle of the wood and reduces the volume of waste products sent to incineration.

FSC® 100 %
The FSC® 100% label is used on products where all forest-based materials such as wood, paper, or cardboard originate from FSC-certified forests.
Consequently, the FSC 100% label does not necessarily mean that every material in the finished product is FSC-certified. If a product contains non-forest-based materials—such as plastic—these materials are not covered by the FSC 100% label.
For instance, on a cardboard gift box with a plastic window, the FSC 100% label applies only to the cardboard itself, provided the forest-based material in the box is FSC-certified. The plastic window is not a forest-based material and is therefore not covered by the FSC certification.
The FSC 100% label assures you that all paper and wood materials in the product you are holding come from FSC®-certified forests.

FSC® MIX
The FSC® MIX label is used on products where the forest-based components consist of a mix of materials from FSC-certified forests, recycled materials, and/or FSC Controlled Wood.
When a FSC MIX product is manufactured according to the FSC percentage system, at least 70% of the forest-based materials must consist of material that contributes to the FSC claim. This can include material from FSC-certified forests and/or post-consumer recycled material. For paper products, pre-consumer recycled paper may also be included as claim-contributing material. The remaining materials may include, among other things, FSC Controlled Wood and pre-consumer recycled wood.
FSC Controlled Wood consists of wood and wood-based materials from sources that meet FSC requirements for acceptable sources. The origin is assessed against the FSC Controlled Wood standard to reduce the risk of the wood coming from unacceptable sources. This entails, among other things, that the wood must not:
- be illegally harvested
- be harvested in areas where traditional or civil rights are violated
- be harvested in forests where high conservation values are threatened by forest management activities
- originate from areas where forest is converted into plantations or non-forest land
- be harvested in forests where genetically modified trees are planted.
It is therefore important to distinguish between FSC-certified forests and FSC Controlled Wood. Controlled Wood is not the same as wood from FSC-certified forests; rather, it is material from sources that have been assessed against FSC requirements for acceptable sources and can be included in FSC MIX products.
The FSC® MIX label indicates that the product contains forest-based materials that meet FSC requirements for certified or controlled materials.
