Ecodesign regulation is part of the EU Green Deal

The new Ecodesign Regulation (ESPR – Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation) will set new environmental and circular requirements for virtually all products produced and sold in the EU.

We are ready to help you with our knowledge of the Ecodesign regulation and will keep you updated as product requirements are set.

What is the Ecodesign Regulation (ESPR)?

The Ecodesign Regulation is a set of EU rules that ensures that products, including packaging, are designed with low environmental impact throughout their life cycle - from production to disposal. It is part of the EU's Green Deal, which aims to make Europe carbon-neutral by 2050.

It covers a wide range of policies and actions to promote more sustainable solutions and reduce waste by supporting a more circular economy.

Why is Ecodesign important for your business?

Not only is it a legal requirement, but Ecodesign also creates the opportunity to introduce more environmentally friendly measures.

The increasing consumer demand for sustainable solutions makes investing in sustainability a strategic advantage in a market where eco-friendly choices are emphasised more than ever before.

"We want to be not only a packaging supplier for our customers but also a partner that actively contributes to taking responsibility for our impact on society and the environment."

Jan Kornelius, CEO Scanlux Packaging

When did the Ecodesign Regulation come into effect?

The Packaging Regulation came into effect on 18 July 2024. The specific product requirements for each product group are set by the European Commission via delegated acts and will be implemented gradually towards 2030.

The expert forum that will determine the specific product requirements is expected to start work in the first quarter of 2025.

Is the Ecodesign Regulation a law or just guidance?

The Ecodesign Regulation is a law. It is part of EU regulation that sets specific requirements for how products and packaging should be designed to minimise environmental impact.

If your packaging does not comply with these requirements, you cannot market your products in the EU. It will therefore be important for companies to adapt their packaging to the new rules.

What requirements does your packaging need to fulfil?

Below is an overview of the parameters that the EU Commission's expert committee can set to improve product performance under the regulation:

  • Durability
  • Reliability
  • Recyclability
  • Energy consumption and energy efficiency
  • Water consumption and water efficiency
  • Environmental impact, including carbon and environmental footprint.

In addition, there are a number of disclosure requirements such as

  • Digital product passport (DDP) aims to create transparency about the carbon footprint and recyclability of products to help consumers make sustainable choices. Companies must provide detailed information about the lifecycle and durability of products. There must be a physical data carrier on the product, such as a QR code on the packaging, product or accompanying documentation like the manual.

Information on substances of concern must be collected and shared by companies, including the environmental and health impact of substances.

What will this mean for your packaging?

  • Use fewer materials: Minimise the use of raw materials and avoid waste.
  • Increase focus on recycling: The packaging must be reusable or easily separated and recycled.
  • Incorporate recycled materials: Use recycled materials wherever possible.
  • Ensure a longer lifespan: Design packaging to last longer or to be re-used multiple times.
  • Add a digital product passport: Create transparency and disclose what materials the packaging contains and how it can be recycled.

"We recommend our customers to look for solutions that increase the share of recycled material in their packaging to meet upcoming market and consumer demands while reducing the carbon footprint for upcoming CSRD and DDP reporting. "
