An incredible start-up story
“I was selling cash register rolls at the time. And then somebody asked: ‘Have you got any bags?’
Jan Kornelius was just 19 years old. But he already had quite some experience of the retail business – and was fascinated. So he went home and, along with a friend, designed a special bag for fruit. Before long, he was selling the bag to grocery stores in Copenhagen. That was in 1988.
Today, Scanlux Packaging is one of the largest packaging companies serving the retail industry in Scandinavia.

“Since we started, our concept has been to analyse and optimise our customers’ packaging so it matches their needs and their brand. This means we have always helped customers choose the most efficient materials and reduce waste. So, when demand started to grow for sustainable packaging, we were ready,” says Jan.
In 2016, Scanlux completed a certification process that ensures all operations meet the requirements of the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) and the environmental management standard ISO 14001. The commitment to seeking better solutions for the environment and society continues.
When customers buy Scanlux FSC®-certified products, for example, they can be sure no illegal deforestation, slavery, child labour, or soil and water contamination have been involved at any stage of the production process.

Customer-driven growth
Jan explains how the company has grown over the past 30 years. “I think we were the first Danish packaging company to offer luxury packaging materials at reasonable prices. To meet customer expectations, we started up overseas production in the early 1990s and opened our first webshop in 2002.
“Many of our customers also expanded their retail chains, so we built a larger warehouse in 2006 to provide them with storage space. This means that, when store staff places an online order, we can deliver what they need straight away.”

Scanlux produces wrapping and shopping bags for many well-known retailers in Denmark, including Magasin, BR, and Matas, and for some of Sweden’s high-end fashion brands, such as Björn Borg, Filippa K, Acne Studios, and Peak Performance.
The business has also expanded beyond Scandinavia. Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the UK are now important export markets.
