Scanlux Packaging’s CO2 calculator is on the way

Sustainability and C02 reduction mean something at Scanlux Packaging. This is why we are currently working on developing a tool to easily screen the C02 impact of packaging for stores and webshops.

“Today, it’s no longer enough to give customers advice about the best packaging. They also need guidance about which packaging is the most sustainable”. With these words Thomas Bülow Skouborg, Head of Digital Marketing & Communications presented our recent work on developing a C02 calculator.

Packaging can be incredibly complex. Packaging design is multi-disciplinary – there are many different factors to address. These include everything from graphics, function, protection of products, the experience when the packaging is opened, and not least sustainability and the environment. It’s this last aspect that we hope to make clearer and more transparent with the use of our C02 calculator.

“We have noticed that price and quality are no longer the only criteria that matter, but that sustainability is also especially important for many customers. A C02 calculator will create more transparency and provide an alternative parameter aside from the price. We can give the customer a number that shows how much a product impacts our climate. The calculator is a complicated screening tool that will provide a reasonable estimate. Our move from a qualified guess to a data-based approach is certain to make it easier for customers to choose products” says project leader Thomas Bülow Skouborg.

We have high expectations for the new C02 calculator, and expect to be able to bring it into use in the spring. At the moment, we are using resources to map the C02 impact of the materials, transport and production, and our ambition is to map the entire supply chain and put all the data in the C02 calculator.

We want to be pioneers in sustainable packaging

“It’s a demanding and big job, and we’re pleased that this is now happening after having worked towards a calculator of this kind for several years. Now it’s all about getting this calculator out on the market as quickly as possible,” says Thomas Bülow Skouborg, concluding: “We want to be pioneers in this field, so we can contribute to a more sustainable world. It’s a lengthy process, but we’re working hard; not just for the sake of the company, but also for the sake of the environment.”
